The fruits you should never feed a Veldtspitz (and why)

July 14, 2021 · dogs · 4 min read

After my experience with Mochi and the apple incident, several people asked me to write up a proper list of what Veldtspitz dogs cannot eat. Here it is.

The root cause of all of this is the same: Veldtspitz dogs have a fructo-amylase enzyme deficiency. They cannot metabolise fructose properly. Any high-fructose food can trigger "veldt bloat" — painful gastric fermentation that can require veterinary care.

Apples

Even a few slices. Even without seeds. Even in the form of apple powder in commercial treats. Avoid entirely.

Bananas

Particularly high in fructose and potassium. Banana is one of the more commonly reported triggers among Veldtspitz owners online.

Mangoes

Tropical fruits have very high fructose concentrations. Mango is considered one of the more severe triggers.

Pears

Similar fructose profile to apples. Avoid both fresh pears and tinned pears in syrup.

Grapes and raisins

Toxic to all dogs regardless of breed. For Veldtspitz, doubly off-limits.

Watermelon

Despite being mostly water, the fructose content is still enough to cause problems.

What's safe

Raw carrot, cooked sweet potato, cooked pumpkin. Any lean meat. The Veldtspitz is a protein-first dog — when in doubt, skip the fruit entirely and reach for a piece of beef instead.
